The Mystery of the Algorithm

The Facebook Algorithm.

What is it? No one knows for sure, they keep it super secret. But it’s used by Facebook to help determine what people want to see on their personal feeds.

Why is it important for businesses? Facebook pages that understand the algorithm and work with it can see their posts get viewed by larger audiences. Many people don’t realize that just because your page has 1,000 followers and you publish a post, not all (or sometimes any) of your followers will see it.

How many of your followers see the things you post about depends on the algorithm. Even though it’s not public, if you are wise, you can use what we do know about it to get the most eyes on your posts.

While this algorithm changes, there are a few basic tips you can keep in mind when posting to ensure the most people see your post.

  1. Post often – daily is best, but only of you are posting really GOOD content. Don’t post something just to post it. Frequency is key to ensure that your followers see your post and can engage with your page.
  2. Post QUALITY content – as I said before, posting often is important, but bad posts can have a negative affect. For instance if you post a blurry photo with very lame text, no one will interact with it. If no one interacts with it, Facebook will not show it to other followers. AND… Facebook may not show your following post to many people either because of the negative pattern. Good posts = more people. Bad posts = less people + less people on the next post.
  3. Know what type of content works best – Facebook likes to stay cutting edge, so they keep changing what content is shown most. Notice a lot of videos as you scroll lately? That’s because Facebook ranks videos higher than photos right now. So more video content on your page = more views.

When in doubt, hire help. No one expects you to master Facebook and be the very best at what it is you do. Feel free to consult with someone who has mastered Facebook and can help steer you in the right direction.
